Guglielmo Coladonota Biography

Coladonato – Biografia (Biography)

Antonio Piccoli

–         Macchè hobby, tu pittore sei e pittore sarai, caro amico italiano.

Root of Life

Born on 3rd January 1933 at Torricella Peligna, Guglielmo Coladonato now lives and works in Rome.

At the age of 12, in common with another 150 children aged between 5 and 15, who also had been left orphans by the War, he was given a home at Silvi Marini in one of those “Villaggi dei fanciulli” (Children’s Villages) established by the Government as a gesture towards helping needy children. Most of them stayed until 1951-52.

During this period Guglielmo spent the vast amounts of free time he had, since school lessons were so few and far between, committing himself to sculpture. He transformed any materials that passed through his hands, such as plaster, stone or earth, into statues.

Once he had left the Village he went to Switzerland to further his studies and then he went to live in Rome, he married, had two children and continued with his hobby, sculpture.

Later he began to paint, also as a hobby.

Then the lucky episode happened which was decisive for his life as an artist.

Whilst on a visit to Spain for a summer holiday with his family, one day he settled the family into a campsite and then set off in his old Fiat 600, armed with pallet, colours, and brushes, he went in search of nature. Landscapes, farmhouses, fields….. he was faced with all the beauties of Catalonia. All of a sudden he saw a young lady sitting on a stone at the edge of the road thumbing a lift, so Guglielmo slammed on his brakes, reversed, got out of his car and asked her if he could paint her portrait. The young lady looked at him but before she could even reply Coladonato was already at work.

The beautiful Catalan lady smiled and sat still.

After a while a Rolls Royce passed by, then braked sharply and reversed with loud squeals from the tyres. The uniformed chauffeur got out, opened the door, bowed and a long arm reached out with a beckoning finger – Wow! Only a mad Italian would stop to paint a beautiful young girl in this terrible heat! You must be an Italian like I am Salvador Dali.

Struck dumb and shielding his painting, Coladonato felt like a schoolboy caught in the act (of some misdemeanour.) Then he started to paint again, and put in the last strokes.

–     Now, “Italian painter”, come to my house.

So Coladonato got into his 600 with the young lady and they went to Salvador Dali’s house. The Master kept Coladonato there for over a week.

–         I am in paradise, Coladonato told his wife on the phone, and I’ll come down to earth again soon.

It was an interlude that was exalting, instructive and fun.

–            Guglielmo come and paint with me, the Master shouted at point-blank range, do you see that cockerel that is frightening my model?

–         But this is only a hobby for me, I don’t…

–         What hobby! You are an artist and you will be an artist, my dear Italian friend. It is your destiny! And if you don’t become a famous artist then my name is not Salvador Dali.

Thus began his work as a great artist.

Exhibitions in the large Art Galleries (Museums) in Italy, London, New York, Venezuela. Hundreds of prizes, critiques, and one very unusual event: he painted a nude female on live TV.

His success carried on. Hundreds of his works have been hung in Art Galleries in Rome, Milan, Florence, New York and London, at the United Nations and in the Hall of Deputies in Rome.

The Encyclopaedia of Italian Art speaks of him as an artist with “a fervid inspiration, lively colourings and interesting choice of subjects. The spontaneity of his painting is evident as is his imagination which enlivens all his artistic conceptions. His paintings strike one’s imagination and are easily remembered.” The atmosphere of his native land accompanies the artist in his life and inspires his work: the colours of the landscape and the Abruzzan people, which Coladonato recalls thus: “I come from Abruzzo. I always have before my eyes the openness of my native landscape nourished by light, by greys, by greens, by the countryside itself, with the melancholy, sadness of my simple people who are ready to ransom themselves for a better future. I see again my rocks, on which I embroidered my first dreams as an artist.”

Coladonato’s works each now are valued at prices varying from 600,000 Euros to 9,000,000 Euros.

This short biography and the paintings were taken from a leaflet printed in the 1980’s on the occasion of his personal exhibition at the National Museum of Science and Technology “Leonardo Da Vinci” in Milan, and from a talk at his exhibition at the Town Hall in Monticello in 2004.
